Game Designer Jobs - Design Positions in Game Dev

A game designer is the architect of fun - they decide how the game works, what the player can do, and why they want to keep doing it. The day-to-day work involves Game Design Documents, prototyping mechanics (often in engine editors or spreadsheets), balancing stats, and designing progression systems. Level design takes this further into spatial storytelling - building levels that guide players without holding their hands, where every room tells a story through its architecture alone.

Game design jobs today require a blend of analytical and creative skills. The market expects prototyping tool familiarity (Unity or Unreal at a basic level), Excel and spreadsheet proficiency for balancing work, the ability to write clear documentation, and the skill to present and defend design decisions. Narrative systems knowledge and dialogue tools (Yarn Spinner, Articy Draft) are appearing more frequently in job requirements as well.

Game designer salaries depend heavily on specialisation - systems, levels, narrative, UI/UX, and monetisation are distinct career paths with different pay ranges. A junior game designer learns through iteration: propose, receive feedback, revise. A mid-level designer owns smaller systems or whole areas of the game independently. A senior game designer is a project leader - designing the core loop, supervising junior work, and taking responsibility for whether the game is actually fun. Lead Designer and Creative Director represent the top of this career path.
